Future Land Systems Study: Industry and Academia workshop on 3-4th May 2012

On 3-4th May 2012, EDA will host a workshop to analyze the ‘state of play’ of the European Land Systems industry. The objective is to get a full picture of the sector and its challenges through a discussion between companies from all levels in the supply chain as well as academia. The workshop is organized as part of the ongoing Future Land Systems Study.

In December 2011, the European Defence Agency (EDA) contracted the study “Roadmap and Implementation Plan for the Key Industrial Capabilities on Future Land Systems (FLS)”.

The study is part of EDA’s work on determining the Key Industrial Capabilities that have to be preserved or developed in the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) to fulfil the European need for defence systems in future.

The overall objective of the study is to identify the key industrial capabilities (including technologies, processes and skills) in the land sector of the EDTIB. It will deliver a Roadmap and Implementation Plan of prioritized actions with the purpose of maintaining and developing those areas of the EDTIB of strategic importance and a time horizon divided into near, mid and long term. The study is planned to deliver its results in December 2012.

A workshop organized on 14th March 2012 by the contractor BAE Systems (leading a broader consortium of industries) addressed the first work-package objective: to develop a common vision between the stakeholders about the European military land sector of the future, with particular focus on identification of the future military requirements. Member States’, EDA and EUMS experts had the opportunity to exchange views and experiences about capabilities requirements needed on Future Land Systems.

The planned outcome of the capability analysis combined with a mapping of existing industrial/technology capabilities which is conducted in parallel will allow defining gaps but also priorities in the future industrial capabilities at the later stages of the study. The workshop on 3-4th May will provide essential input for a complete picture of the European land sector.
