Background

In October 2017 the second phase of the Consultation Forum for Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector (CF SEDSS II) was launched. This project which has a duration of 22 months, expiring on 15 July 2019, is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. To implement it, EDA will cooperate with the European Commission (Directorate General Energy –DG ENER) and EDA Member States' Ministries of Defence (MoD) and Armed Forces, as well as with other stakeholders including academia and industry. Building up on the achievements of the first phase (2015-2017), the second phase (2017-2019) will probe how energy efficiency measures, renewable energy sources and technologies, as well as protection of critical energy infrastructure considerations could be more efficiently applied to the European defence sector. Therefore, it will contribute to the identification of the bottlenecks that are preventing the sector from fully benefiting from sustainable energy. This will help the work move towards to a more implementation-focused phase leading to the generation of defence energy-related projects and identifying the related and applicable funding instruments.

To address the objectives of the second phase, the Consultation Forum will consist of the following three main working groups (including sub-working groups):
