Space is not only acknowledged as a potential theatre of operations, but also seen as an important strategic enabler in support of all other defence domains. EDA’s current space related capability projects, programmes and activities focus on a wide variety of individual topics where European defence capability gaps have been identified:
- Satellite Communications (SatCom)
- Space-Based Earth Observation (SBEO)
- Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT)
- Space Situational Awareness (SSA).
The Agency’s work focuses on supporting Member States and EU users to ensure a more coherent European capability landscape with quick and easy access to SatCom services, including security and guarantee of access. Improved access to SBEO services and data and the identification of PNT requirements to better support current and future military missions and operations are explored. In SSA, the increasing number of space activities, objects and commercial and non-commercial actors require action to react to threats to Member States and EU space capabilities.
