What is the potential of ecodesign for defence?

Whether and how to make the ecodesign framework contributing to defence capabilities and harvest the advantages of circularity was addressed by 20 experts from 13 countries across Europe met on 19 May 2022.

The event gathered representatives from Member States’ Ministries of Defence, European institutions, the defence industry, research institutes/centres and universities within the “Sustainable Ecodesign” Project Circle, established under the EDA-managed “Incubation Forum for Circular Economy in European Defence” (IF CEED). A specific contribution was made by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation about the ongoing action on Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) chemicals and materials, aimed to steer innovation towards green transition.

The experts started discussing the topics for potential transnational project ideas, by elaborating on how to identify ecodesign approaches and requirements for capabilities, systems, intermediate products, etc., in different defence domains, as well as how to potentially support the SSbD framework (e.g. by contributing to a specific case study on surfactants for textiles or CRM replacement).

The work of this IF CEED Project Circle will be assisted by a specific survey to define priorities and will also support the implementation of the EU Green Deal and the EU Climate Change and Defence Roadmap.

The Incubation Forum for Circular Economy in European Defence (IF CEED) is co-funded by the European Union (under the LIFE programme) and the Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs - Directorate of Defence.
