Anders Sjöborg joins EDA as Deputy Chief Executive

Swedish national Anders Sjöborg took up his role as Deputy Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA) on 1 April 2026, bringing extensive experience in defence procurement, legal affairs and European cooperation.

Before joining EDA, Sjöborg held several senior positions at Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the government agency responsible for procuring military equipment and logistics for the Swedish Armed Forces. There, he oversaw the legal and security dimensions of major acquisition programmes and represented Sweden in European cooperation on armaments and capability development.

His appointment comes at a time when EU leaders and Ministers of Defence are examining ways to strengthen the Agency’s role.

“Anders Sjöborg will be a strong addition to EDA at a time when we must expand our support for joint procurement initiatives, helping Member States translate political commitment into concrete acquisition programmes. His experience in defence equipment procurement and delivery will bring significant value across all our work strands,” Chief Executive André Denk said.

“What makes EDA unique is its ability to cover all aspects of EU defence cooperation. I look forward to working with a team of exceptional professionals from across Europe, with deep expertise in all military domains and administrative procedures. As Member States’ defence posture evolves, EDA is called to play a more significant role, and I am proud to contribute to this effort,” Anders Sjöborg said.

Sjöborg succeeds Denk, who served as Deputy Chief Executive from February 2023 to May 2025 before becoming Chief Executive. Since then, Stefano Cont has held the role on an acting basis alongside his responsibilities as EDA’s Capability and Armaments Director.
