EDA Chief Executive visits Austria

André Denk, the Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA), and Klaudia Tanner, the Austrian Minister of Defence, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Europe’s defence readiness. They met on 22 June in Vienna to discuss European cooperation, capability development and collaborative procurement.

The discussions focused on Austria’s defence priorities and how European cooperation, notably within the EDA framework, can help Member States address critical capability shortfalls and accelerate the delivery of military equipment and capabilities needed to strengthen Europe’s defence readiness.

Following the meeting with Minister Tanner, Denk held talks with Austria's National Armaments Director Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek, Capability Planning Director Lieutenant General Bruno Günter Hofbauer and Research and Technology Director Brigadier General Rudolf Zauner, the Chair of EDA’s RT&I Steering Board, on areas of ongoing cooperation between Austria and EDA.

Austria plays a leading role in several priority areas of European defence cooperation, notably artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, where it coordinates work under the capability priorities agreed by EU Member States. The discussions examined how these emerging technologies can support future capability development and contribute to Europe's defence readiness.

Particular attention was given to the CBRN Surveillance as a Service initiative, one example of multinational capability development currently under way. Led by Austria, this PESCO project aims to provide participating countries with access to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear surveillance capabilities through a shared service model, reducing costs while expanding access to specialised assets. The project is one example of how EU countries can develop capabilities collectively in areas where costs, technical complexity or limited demand make national solutions less viable.

On the sidelines of the visit, Denk delivered a keynote address at the Austrian Armaments Day, an annual forum bringing together defence officials, military representatives and industry. He underlined the necessity of European cooperation to developing, procuring and sustaining the military capabilities required to ensure the EU’s defence readiness.

There, Denk also exchanged with counter-improvised explosive devices (C-IED) experts, as Austria hosts the European Centre for Manual Neutralisation Capabilities (ECMAN), which started as an EDA project in 2014.
